A garage door that will not open usually has a simple cause. Work through these safe checks before booking a technician. If you hit a sign of a broken spring or cable, stop and call us.
1. Check the remote
Try the wall button inside the garage. If that works, replace the remote battery. Most remotes take a coin battery available at supermarkets.
2. Check the power
Is the opener's light on? Check the power point, the plug and your switchboard for a tripped safety switch.
3. Look at the safety beams
The small sensors either side of the opening must face each other. If one has been knocked, or a cobweb or leaf is blocking it, the door may refuse to close or reverse straight away. Wipe the lenses and line them up.
4. Has the manual release been pulled?
If someone pulled the release cord, the opener will run without moving the door. Re-engage it by following the instructions on your opener, or by running the opener once so the carriage clicks back in.
5. Is the door locked?
Many roller and tilt doors have a manual lock. If it is engaged, the motor will strain against it and stop.
6. Look and listen for a broken spring
A loud bang from the garage, a gap in the spring above the door, or a door that suddenly feels extremely heavy all point to a broken spring. Do not keep trying the opener and do not lift the door. Spring replacement is a job for a technician.
7. Check the cables and tracks
A cable that has come off its drum, or a door sitting crooked in its tracks, can jam everything. Leave the door where it is, as a crooked door can fall.
